His guitar solos are hypnotic, otherworldly sounding, yet possessing the quality of a lullaby; or so imagines eighteen-year-old Julie Fortier while she is carried away, sometimes driven to tears listening to the music of an obscure British blues-rock band called Essex. Born in San Francisco in the early fifties and raised in Marin County to the north, Julie's passion for rock-and-roll and blues comes naturally in the aftermath of the city's "Summer of Love": a phenomenon that has forever changed the course of popular music and transformed the Bay Area into a hot new music scene by 1972. When her sultry roommate Renata manages to get a date with a record executive from New York, she offers Julie the chance to accompany them to a party at a big house on Mount Tamalpais, where she assures her there will be a who's who of famous rock stars attending. But Julie declines, not anxious to "be a groupie," until Renata mentions that the band Essex is in the Bay Area seeking exposure, and will most likely be at the party. Unable to overcome her curiosity about the lead guitarist, as Essex's album cover has no pictures or background information, Julie agrees to go, and in doing so, irrevocably changes her life when she meets Colin Geoffrey. Over the next few weeks, she cautiously develops a friendship with the remarkably talented, though somewhat enigmatic and troubled musician. Soon after, they become lovers, living what Colin would refer to years later as "a lifetime of magic in less than a year." But their bonds, so strong and seemingly unbreakable are eventually shattered by the tragic events that strike and devastate their lives with the aid of demons from their pasts. As nearly two decades go by, they are destined to live their lives apart on opposite sides of the Atlantic. While Colin becomes a highly successful solo artist battling drug abuse, alcoholism and other excesses of the rock-and-roll lifestyle, Julie marries and builds her own impressive career as a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and struggles in vain for the chance to have children and a happy and stable home life. In spite of her involvement with other lovers and having no contact whatsoever with Colin, she cannot forget him or his music, and remains powerfully drawn and intimate with him by listening to his recordings and attending his concerts throughout the years. When they are fatefully reunited in Cambridge, England, eighteen years after their first meeting, they each revel in the opportunity to pick up where they left off in the early seventies, but find it is not so easy, when history tends to repeat itself, and they are faced with a series of misfortunes that will put their individual strength and love for each other to the ultimate test.
