Apex Prey follows the investigative work of a misanthropic, Queer homicide detective. A woman speeds along an empty highway, her blue SUV covered in blood and scraped metal as she flees the scene. She has her four-year-old daughter in the car, while the killer clings to her roof. Any time she slows down, she can hear the terrible scratching of its claws grow louder. Five hours later, Colorado Springs detective Charles Davner is awoken by a call. Tasked with tracking down the murderer of a highway patrolman, he'll start by piecing together the dead cop's last call-a traffic stop involving a bloody SUV, a woman, and her daughter. Following the woman's trail back to Pueblo, he discovers another detective, Andrea Morales, investigating a murder at gas station in town. Matching wounds on the victims, a deep slash across the throat with a serrated blade, convinces the two to join up. Searching for leads sends them to the woman's house, and an interview with her daughter leaves them with a sketch of the killer-one with red eyes, razor-like claws, and hundreds of sharp teeth. As more bodies begin to surface, they'll track the monster back to Colorado Springs, finding the clues to its origins in a labyrinth of sewers beneath the city streets. With more deaths each day, Charles and Andrea know they're running out of time to stop it. Teaming up with a university zoologist, they'll hunt the creature in its lair, ultimately confronting it in a fiery conclusion.
