THE SERIES The Modjeska Monteith Simkins Site gains its name from Columbia, South Carolina's matriarch of human rights, who purchased the site in 1932. Archaeological investigations focused on the earlier occupants who rented the property from the 1890s to 1932 and, like the majority of us, didn't make it into the history books. This three-volume technical report describes the archaeological findings from the Modjeska Simkins Site. Volume I provides detailed descriptions of the project, including research design, field and laboratory methodologies, and feature/provenience descriptions. Volume II is the complete catalog of recovered artifacts. Volume III is a report of the fanual analysis. Together, these reports provide the basis for site interpretations presented elsewhere and will hopefully encourage others to ask new questions of the data and extend the interpretation and analysis to other sites. COLUMBIA ARCHAEOLOGY PROGRAM The Columbia Archaeology Program (CAP) is a research and education organization that provides a focal-point for engaging scholary, professional, and community perspectives on the social dynamics and historical legecies of Columbia's diverse residents. We are particuarlly interested in those histories which lie outside the 'official' and 'mainstream,' and those histories which challenge our existing ideas and understandings. Our mission is to promote alternative histories of underrepresented pasts in ways that challenge our existing ideas of the present. www.ColumbiaArchaeology.org
