The 'Atlas of the coast of Brazil is a manuscript produced during the years 1643 and 1649 by the cartographer Georg Marcgrave and the hydrographer Jan Lichthart. This is the first edition of this manuscript that was found in the National Archive in The Hague. Here it is meticulously transcribed in English and Portuguese, together with a wealth of detailed maps. The old place names have been transcribed into their current names. Also presented here are the descriptions of the coast of Brazil in 14 charts (originally Old Dutch and Portuguese and translated into English). There are 22 chapters with colour drawings describing the coast from Bahai to Ceará. There is an introduction by Henk den Heijer, head of the History Chair of the Leiden University, and the texts are transcribed by Benjamin Teensma.
