Description

AULD LANG SYNE by Jack NearyIt is New Year's Eve. Mary Antonelli, in her 50's, sits in her South Boston home as a snowstorm rages. The doorbell rings. She opens the door to greet Joe LaCedra, a seedy-looking individual who believes he's been set up to meet a gangland thug. Once Joe realizes Mary, whom he remembers from their grammar school days, has called him independently and has nothing to do with his outlaw life, he prepares to leave. Until Mary tells him why she called him--She needs to be dead before midnight. She shows him a bag full of cash--$67,000-that is his if he takes on this job. Joe refuses. Mary says she promised her husband, on his death bed, that she would be with him on this night. Joe, agitated and with a New Year's Eve agenda of his own, tries unsuccessfully to talk Mary out of her plan. Mary determines that Joe might be involved the "men in suits" who have been harassing her neighborhood grocer. She senses Joe has an assignment to kill the grocer, and when Joe leaves, Mary phones to warn the grocer. An hour later, Joe returns, livid, a bloody mess. He breaks down the door. The grocer, forewarned, met him with a shovel blow to the head. Joe finds Mary's body behind the sofa, presumed a suicide. His cell phone rings. He tells his employer he failed his assignment. He knows his employer will seek him out and kill him. Mary emerges from behind the sofa, having feigned death to protect herself. Now she knows Joe is in serious trouble. Mary still wants him to go through with her plan. He wrestles with her insistence, and his own fear. Each reveals secrets from their pasts, each eventually earns respect from the other. It seems these two people were meant to be together on this night, at this time. Perhaps everything will be okay.Suddenly, a car is heard. Joe hits all the lights, and pulls out a gun. He goes to the window. Shots are fired. Joe is not hit. He triumphantly chides the thugs as they drive away. He goes around the room and turns the lights back on. He looks at Mary. She has been hit. She is dying. She demands he take the bag of money and escape, start a new life. Joe wants to call for help. She won't let him. She knows that this is what was supposed to happen. Joe leaves. Mary dies.A happy ending.
