Description

M.C.V. was born into a well to-do middle class family in a fashionable suburb of Berlin, Germany with all the privileges afforded her class, riding lessons, foreign language lessons, piano and guitar lessons, painting lessons from her father, a renowned German Architect, working under Albert Speer and friend of Albert Einstein She went to a private school with like-minded girls as best friends, when the second world war, its bombs, cannons, deprivations, the Soviet Red Army rolled over the idyllic youth. She had lost between 40 and 50 close relatives, cousins, school mates, fiancés, her father. Tried to survive after the war, beating years of hunger and illness. Upon invitation of Xlibris she has now depicted her life at the Free University of Berlin, the ten years after the war in the devastated capital, her adventure of immigration to the U.S., her humble beginnings with her hair dresser sponsor, her first drob at International House of Philadelphia, having a baby in a foreign land, and again, just like in post war Berlin, fighting for mere survival, a real immigrant story. Through the generosity of friends and bosses, she was able to join university life again, and with much difficulty, always trying to hold together her new family of mother, and baby, obtained her first graduate degree. It was in Philadelphia where she had her first jobs, met the father of her baby, had her first surviving child, met her future American husband. But fate took the budding family to Rochester New York for 5 years before coming again like an "adventure" to Montgomery Alabama, the heart of the South. It had been planned as a visit, but fate again decreed that this city would be her new home from then on. Triumphs would be hers, yet tragedy after tragedy would strike just like during the Great War.
