She holds a degree in Chinese Studies from Leeds University, England, and is married to a Singaporean-Tamil. In 1989, she and her husband migrated from Singapore to Western Australia. She is now an Australian citizen. Ilsa is the author of several books, including histories of Raffles Hotel, the Singapore Cricket Club, the national lottery Singapore Pools, and the Land Transport Authority, in Singapore. An active environmentalist since the 1970s, she has served on the Councils of the Singapore and Malaysian Nature Societies, and has also worked as Manager of Public Relations and Marketing for Greening Australia (Western Australia), a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the conservation and renewal of native vegetation. When not working on writing assignments, Ilsa enjoys walking, reading, cooking and eating Asian food, bird-watching, gardening native Australian plants and vegetables, and practising Qi Gong, a type of Chinese meditation yoga.
