"I was born on January 20, 1875, in the state of Illinois. At the age of one year, my mother took me on the train to Bangor, Michigan. The ride made me sick and I vomited...that evil has followed me all the days of my sojourn." In his Autobiography, William Franklin Godfrey (1875-1966) recounts his life growing up on the Michigan and Nebraska frontiers, as well as unsuccessful family expeditions to Missouri and Colorado. How life has changed since then! Twenty-first-century readers have no idea how rough, primitive, and dangerous life was in Michigan (panthers!) and Nebraska in the late nineteenth century when William Franklin Godfrey was young. As one of ten children, he often knew the privations of not having enough to eat, of doing without, and of having to do a man's work when still only a child. But he also had the love of his mother; the steadfastness, courage, and determination of his father; and the companionship of his brothers and sister. Although the main focus of this book is the author's early life on the frontier, readers will also follow his life through to his marriage in 1900, the births of his children, and his final move to California where he lived until his death in 1966 at the age of ninety-one. Little Willie's determination to survive and flourish in the most trying of circumstances; his confidence in himself and his trust in God, even at a very young age; and his love and compassion for others will be an inspiration to those who read of the life, travails, and times of William Franklin Godfrey.
