Automated structural design and analysis is currently available in the form of flexible, general purpose systems. The system described in this report, called ISDASF (Iterative Structural Design Analysis of Steel Frames) was developed to provide a similar capability but restricted to architectural structures, hence, certain characteristics of the topology of such structures could be built into the input to simplify it. The aim of developing the system was to provide a simple and inexpensive tool for use primarily by students of Architecture and Engineering to develop experience of structural behaviour and design for buildings larger than can be readily designed by hand. It can also be used in the early design stages of certain buildings in practice. The system is composed of five sections: 1. Preprocessing; 2. Predesign; 3. Analysis; 4. Stress Checking and Redesign; 5. Output of Results. Of significance is the preprocessor which uses a flexible problem-oriented language with extensive default values and unformatted and mixed lateral and numeric input.
