Ash Carver is a freak. At least that's what everyone in her school thinks. Living in Santa Monica, Ash is a seventeen-year-old foster kid who has been relentlessly bullied by practically everyone in her school for as long as she can remember. The only family she has in the world is her little brother Flint, who knows all too well how it feels to be bullied by both peers and teachers alike. Despite everything Ash finds a way to survive on even the smallest shred of optimism. High school won't last forever, and as long as she has Flint she doesn't need to make friends with her Neanderthal peers anyway. But when Flint is kidnapped, Ash must do what no one else will: Find her baby brother. To do this she must traverse a magical barrier dividing our world from another- one filled with cat-human hybrids, people with the inborn ability to do magic, and optimal chances for her to realize just how much of a freak she really is. Assuming of course she can survive being hunted down by shadow hunters, men and women with the ability to rip someone's shadow away from them. In order to bring Flint home safely, Ash must overcome her fear and self-doubt to journey across an unfamiliar land and do something she never thought she'd be able to do: fight.
