Beyond The Fence is a history of the Darling Downs-Moreton Rabbit Board (DDMRB) from its beginnings in 1892 to 2022. The book is a referenced account of rabbits in Australia, of the 130 year history of the DDMRB, and includes reminiscences told through interviews and photographs of those associated with the DDMRB, past and present. The DDMRB maintains the oldest and longest purpose-built, rabbit-proof barrier fence still in use in Australia, if not the world, and is the only organisation in Australia that is specifically dedicated to the eradication of rabbits. The Board protects 28,000 sq. km of south-east Queensland with a fence, some of which is top netted for wild dogs. The fence extends for 555 km along some of the Queensland/New South Wales border from Mt Gipps to Cottonvale and thence north to beyond Chinchilla where it meets the Wild Dog Barrier Fence. For over a century, the fence has protected the valuable horticultural and agricultural areas of south-east Queensland and prevented rabbit expansion across the region. Rabbits are Australian agriculture's most costly vertebrate pest animal and are also the single biggest menace to threatened native species. In protecting the natural environment from rabbits, the fence also serves to reduce impacts of other invasive species such as foxes, wild dogs, feral pigs, goats and deer.Notwithstanding a Royal Commission, Inquiries and Reviews, some of which recommended abolition, the DDMRB has survived and has proven to be critical and essential in the fight against rabbits. Initially funded by landowners with stock, Local Governments covering the operational area currently provide the Board's funding. The DDMRB has an intriguing history, not only of rabbits and the fence, but of legislative impact, state and local government involvement, biological control and, above all, of the people who have contributed so much to its important role. The history is one of determination, adaptability, loyalty and service by Directors who have guided its governance; administrative staff and those who have erected, maintained and patrolled the rabbit-proof fence; those who have eliminated rabbits and dealt with compliance; and Councils that have provided funds.
