Pippin Snark is a young woman in a routine job who enjoys writing bluegrass tunes to Lewis Carroll poems. She befriends her music professor, Maestro Ivan Chagall Kaminsky, whom she calls Mick, and he recognizes that she is a unique Gatekeeper, the last surviving descendant of a spacetime gate-creating hero from Arcan, his world. Mick convinces Pippin to return with him, develop her latent abilities, and accept her new duty.When Mick takes Pippin to Arcan, she discovers that he is First Order Enforcer overseeing all portal activity in his territory. He assigns his nephew Tilly, First Order Portal Guardian leader, to train Pippin and prepare her for her new duties. She uses the Invocation, a legendary dance, to create and destroy portals, making herself a threat to groups using current portals and planning an invasion. During her attempt to link and close unhealthy portals, the invaders attack, and Mick falls into Pippin's portal while protecting Tilly when the portal explodes. Now, Pippin must call on the spirit of the first Gatekeeper to find Mick and bring him home, and if successful, choose between two men who love her.
