Traditionally, an elegy is a sad song meant to help a man work his way through his own suffering. The idea is that something terrible happens-a serious injustice, say, or the passing of a loved one-which causes the man to doubt the meaning or value of all of existence. He then tries to more or less sing his way to reconcilation again. This captures the tone of the present work, and hence its subtitle. (And I imagine the title itself is pretty self-explanatory.) The entire book is written in the second person; that is, I directly address various figures within my imagination. The work is organized into seven parts: I: Satan, II: Other, III: Jesus, IV: Music, V: Anima, VI: Death, and VII: River. In each of the parts, my writing is addressed to the namesake figure. The whole thing thus reads a little like an epistolary novel-except for the fact that it's all a true story. My name is Sethu A. Iyer, and I make my living as a freelance writer. I completed this work at the age of 27. It is my third published book. Taken together with my other two works, this one can be understood as the last part of a cohesive trilogy. It brings to a close a creative circle which opened for me a couple years ago.
