Card has his cattle shipping business up and running. He is tired of hunting down outlaws and wants to settle down to ranch and build on his relationship with Maxine Page, the woman that saved his life by killing a hired gunman. Maxine is robbed by three men and in her hast to escape, they shoot her horse. The horse stumbles and Maxine breaks her arm in the fall. She goes to Card's farm seeking help and finds Card there. After she is cared for, Card goes back on the trail after the three men. He will not let anyone harm the ones he loves and must stop them from harming others. He enlist the help of Sheriff Gose and together they are able to arrest the three thief's without having to kill anyone. Card is pleased with the outcome since he did not have to use his gun this time.One of the men he arrested has three brothers that could come after him in revenge. Card spy's on their farm to get a description of the men. He sees children working the fields at the man's family farm.When Maxine is riding home from Clarksville a young boy tries to rob her while yielding a knife. Maxine shows him her gun and he starts to cry. Maxine talks to the boy and finds out he ran away from the Haggard farm where they use the children for child labor to work in the cotton field.Maxine takes to boy to Card and he cares for the child while trying to figure out what to do. They find out the boy's younger sister is also at the farm and being mistreated. Card ask the judge to give him temporary custody of all the children that are being used in the fields. Card, Sheriff Taylor and Maxine take custody of the kids waiting final court orders.The Haggard's hunt down where the kids are being raised and kidnap the children.
