Description

Champions of Authoritarianism examines how authoritarian beliefs of the southern planter class perpetuated the practice of slavery, sparked the Civil War, and left a legacy that affects the contemporary South. Contemporary historians agree that slavery was a primary cause of the Civil War and the illiberalism of the postbellum South. While I do not dispute this consensus, a more comprehensive interpretation requires a deeper dive into the social psychology of the colonial and antebellum South than found in extant historical accounts. A guiding assumption of this book is that psychology can contribute to the interpretation of history. Consistent with this assumption, After all, wI apply abstract social psychological constructs that generalize across time and place while situating social, behavioral, emotional, and cognitive processes in specific historical contexts. Chapter 1 (Why Did William Cross Fight?) begins with my great-great-grandfather, William Cross, who died fighting for the Confederacy. His story and that of the Louisiana Parrish where he lived are segways into an overview of belief systems and the role of authoritarian elites in creating a slave society in the South. The central thesis of this book is set forth that the slave society of the South was a product of the ideas that the elites shared and nurtured. Chapter 2 (Making the Authoritarian Slave Society) describes how the fear and insecurity of southern elites motivated them to create slave societies that would protect their wealth, power, and status from real and imagined threats. Chapter 3 (Dominating the Authoritarian Slave Society) focuses on how the authoritarianism of the planter elites motivated their total and oppressive domination of the slave societies. Chapter 4 (Justifying the Authoritarian Slave Society) explores how the authoritarianism of the planter elites spawned racist justifications for the slave societies. Chapter 5 (Corrupting the Southern Elites) shows how authoritarianism biased the thinking, emotion, and action of the elite enslavers over the course of the first six decades of the 19th century and led to the Civil War. The final chapter (The Legacies of Antebellum Authoritarianism) examines the continuing effects of pre-Civil War authoritarian belief systems on the contemporary South.
