"Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) made brilliant contributions to seventeenth-century mathematics, physics, the literature of ideas and literature itself. His significance is firmly established. Nevertheless, he rewards ongoing critical engagement. In Christological Perspectives in Blake Pascal Rosalene Bradbury addresses the foundation of Pascal's theological project. She argues that what motivated him overall, and what materially informed his non-scientific endeavour, was his devotion to the man-God Jesus le Christ. The significance of Jesus Christ for Pascal's project was thus not peripheral, as often assumed, but fundamental. Pascal was first a Christocentric theologian. Pascal declared that to base the knowledge and character of God in subjective human reasoning, rather than in divine revelation in Jesus Christ, relativises and destroys the concrete basis of the Christian religion. The antithesis equally applies. In Jesus Christ alone God is found. The heart, not the mind, knows this to be true. In this study Bradbury formally sets out Pascal's comprehensive, synthetic, incarnational and ontological Christology from above and shows how Pascal anticipates many themes in twentieth century orthodox Christologies. The shape of this system has not previously been fully demonstrated. Christological Perspectives in Blaise Pascal breaks new ground. No Pascalian scholar can afford to miss it. "--Page [iii].
