Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams and, later, Edward Albee were responsible for the resurgence of post-Second World War American drama. This study attempts to explain why The Crucible, The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? have become modern theatre classics. In particular, thewriter argues that each dramatist sought to find ways of transcending the limitations imposed by the adoption of the basic theatrical conventions of realism, in order to give their works a more universal symbolic significance. Each dramatist developed their own means of creating a heightened level f theatricality whose appeal is essentially visceral rather than intellectual. The plays must preferably be experienced in the theatre of, bailing that, must be read with performance in mind. The failure of many critics to sufficiently value the theatrical and non-literary elements of these works has led to the paradoxical situation where these plays are severely attacked for being poor literature, while their theatrical excellence is constantly being proved in the many revival productions that continue to take place throughout the world. To fully appreciate these plays we need to apply criteria that are appropriate to them. These plays are scripts intended for performance and their plenary meaning can only be fully realised on stage. Consequently, even an examination of the playscripts themselves must be carried out in terms of their theatrical potentialand not simply their literary value.
