Emotional safety refers to the sense of security of exploring sexual desires online to avoid embarrassment or risk to "real" relationships. 27% of clergy within a conservative, Protestant denomination (N = 384) completed a 20-item online survey. the cathartic and emotional safety factors were measured using three questions each to form two cluster variables for which Cronbach alpha coefficients were computed. the sexual catharsis scale attained an alpha level of .92 while the emotional safety scale attained an alpha of .72 indicating that they are relatively reliable and valid collective measures.
