This book is a collection of 455 cartoons that were originally published in college magazines and newspapers fifty years ago. Frank Interlandi, Dean Norman and Richard Watson were students at the University of Iowa in the 1950s. Frank drew "Interlude with Interlandi", a daily panel cartoon published in the Daily Iowan and later in a book collection sold in college book stores nationally. After graduation in 1952 Frank drew a daily cartoon syndicated by the Des Moines Register and Los Angeles Times which was published in major newspapers for 31 years. Dean Norman drew "Doodles by Dean" for the Daily Iowan and also published a book collection in 1956. After graduation he drew cartoon greeting cards for Hallmark and American Greetings. From 1956-1960 some of the Doodles cartoons and new cartoons were syndicated to over 100 college newspapers and magazines in a feature titled Campus Comedy. Richard Watson was the most praised and most criticized cartoonist in the University of Iowa humour magazine titled Magazine X. After graduation, Watson became a philosophy professor at Washington University in St. Louis, and authored many fiction and non-fiction books. The Longest Cave by Roger W. Brucker and Richard A. Watson told the story of the exploration of the Mammoth Cave System in Kentucky. The anniversary edition reprints of all the cartoons published in the book collections in the Daily Iowan but not in the book, and 116 of the Campus Comedy cartoons that were syndicated to college publications nationally. Selections from Magazine X and its predecessor Frivol include five cover cartoons by Frank Interlandi and 34 of Richard Watson's wild and primitive creations. A chapter titled "Just for Iowa" provides explanations for 43 cartoons which were inside jokes relating to particular events and traditions on the University of Iowa campus in the 1950s. And an article about the demise of an electric railway which was a commuter train between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City makes one wonder about the path of progress. The train was an efficient transportation system for almost 50 years and faded quickly in the 1950s as more people bought cars. Now the congested highways, air pollution and crowded parking lots make electric rail transportation seem like a good idea again.
