Description

Volume 1: Surnames Aaron through BrinkleyAndrew Booth's monumental work was originally published in 1920. This multi-volume edition contains the results of years of his work in compiling the service records of soldiers in the hundred of Louisiana units into an alphabetized book form. Several thousand young men from Louisiana served during the Civil War, and Booth attempted to list them in one convenient source. Booth's original has been edited and republished for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. It has long been recognized as an authoritive source for Civil War service history of soldiers from the Pelican state. It is important to note that if soldier is not listed in this work, it does not mean they did not serve. Many records were lost or destroyed during or at the end of the war. Also, be aware that phrases such as "absent without leave" many times meant the soldier had left to another unit. Many of original records used by Andew Booth were visited by this editor in recent years where they are in storage at Jacson Barracks in New Orleans. Several old filing cabinets hold the records, and the archivist felt at the time of the visit there were many additions which could be made to the original work. The records survived the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
