Are you witnessing increased conflict as part of your role as a corrections administrator or supervisor? Use of force incidents, staff turnover, and declining morale are all outward signs conflict. Running a jail or prison is not what it used to be. Mounting staffing issues and the challenges of providing custody, care, and control for current populations require new skills to effectively combat conflict inherent in corrections facilities. Our jails and prisons have unfortunately become the dumping ground for the mentally ill, the extremely violent, those with gender identity dysphoria, the homeless, and others. When placed in close proximity to one another and given the circumstances and environment, conflict is to be expected but must beappropriately managed. This extends to staff as well. Trendy training topics on "de-escalation" and "interpersonal communication skills" (IPC) may be useful but do not prepare administrators and supervisors to deal adequately with staffing issues and current populations. The Conflict Management Techniques (CMT) taught in this curriculum provide administrators and supervisors a way to develop and operationalize necessary skills in today's ever-changing environment. Of all the existing corrections training, I know of none which have the potential to influence immediate and long-term decision making and outcomes like CMT.
