The daily readings come from Old and New Testament texts, prepare us for the lessons in Adult Bible Studies, and are written by Traci Rhoades, Greg Weeks, and Clara Welch. Unit 1 Work The five weeks of daily readings in this unit draw us into the foundational human mandate: work. Unfortunately, all too often work is construed simply as that which gives life meaning. We also know that work can be addictive, that it can disrupt life in many ways. The human as maker/doer dominates so much that people often ask when meeting new people, “What do you do?” These readings encourage us to develop a healthy view of work and the role it should play in our lives. Unit 2 Rest Beginning in the Creation account found in Genesis 2, work followed by rest becomes the biblical pattern. Rest in the Bible is literal and figurative, with legal material specifically focusing on rest from labor, and other texts offering rest from other kinds of obligation or offering a hope for spiritual rest of one kind or another (Matthew 11:28-29; Hebrews 4:1-11). The daily readings in this unit help us come to a holistic understanding of rest and sabbath that isn’t entirely human-centered or self-oriented. Unit 3 Celebration The readings in this unit follow the themes of work and rest with a focus on celebration, a participation in the goodness of work and rest in the presence of God and the whole community of creation. In the Bible, celebration is often tied to historical memory of God’s salvific acts on behalf of God’s people, and to the goodness of God in the gift of creation. The Psalms reflect the full range of celebration. Poems of gratitude and thanksgiving mix with lament and songs of praise. In the New Testament, the celebration that arises from participation in the life of the Spirit of the resurrected Jesus.
