Black teenage girl, Nina, and her family of New Age travellers escape their fire-bombed bus late one night and are offered accomodation in a derelict house by a mysterious benefactor. Far-right activists harass the family, but they are protected by their new friend who offers to support them in exchange for musical performances. Nina becomes successful but discovers a racist group has been exploiting the band by inserting subliminal messages into the PA system at their performances. Nina's absent father, we later discover, along with the far-right activists behind the conspiracy, served in the army together and were involved in the massacre of a rebel group in Somalia. The crime is kept secret, but Nina uncovers it and her father's innocence. Nina and her family are outsiders struggling to survive in a hostile world. However, other damaged characters in the story include ex-soldiers suffering PTSD, teenage boys living on a run-down estate who attend a community centre where Nina and her band plays, also other members of the travelling community. All, to some degree or other, overcome adversity. The story covers roughly one year in Nina's life during which she endures various challenges and setbacks. She also begins a relationship with Richard, an architect, which becomes ever more important and, at the novel's end, is left open to future development.
