Lieutenant Robert Jacobs, a young man with secrets of his own, makes her life aboard ship bearable. He also makes it interesting when he becomes sick while their captain is drunk, and she is thrust into the Captain's Chair when they suddenly come under attack. With a Laserian Battle Cruiser bearing down on them, Beth is required to make a decision. Should she comply with the standard operating procedure for the ship, or should she follow her instincts when they're based on what she's read rather than what she was taught at the academy?
