Virginia Greene, Ph.D. is an ocean scientist trying to keep her first job as a Marine Biologist. At the Miami Area Super Sea Aquarium, she cares for the dolphins but must fight to keep the job against the depredations of her zany boss, Garth Folker. When Daylight Dolphin shows up, her life changes completely. Daylight Dolphin, the title character who drives the action in this novel, talks to other dolphins by what we call "telepathy." It's no big deal to them. How else would truly intelligent beings communicate? After all, even some whales talk that way, as do the various alien creatures on the planet. Since humans are left out of this circle, Daylight wonders why. He really wants to know: "Are the Boat Beings (humans) intelligent like us?" When he announces to his historian parents that he will go to Miami Beach and research those land creatures, the fun starts. Soon he's swimming around at Virginia Greene's facility. She thinks she's training him, but he's really trying to train her to communicate-invading her dreams each night and setting her up for an adventure unlike any other in human history. The scope of the novel is by turns philosophical, funny, and thoughtful. What does it really mean to be an intelligent being? Daylight's adventure helps us see the truth of the matter. The prose is light, deft, and consistently entertaining. The story involves five different conscious life forms, and this contributes to the notable originality of the tale.
