Description

In 2009 a healthy, intelligent, 24-year-old American, Drew Storey, left a secure, well-paid job in the United States for a long-anticipated life abroad. He established himself in Cairo, Egypt where he had spent a semester at the American University in 2006. This time, though, he was on his own, spending his own savings and fending for himself with no institutional backup other than an American passport. He rented a flat 3 blocks from Tahrir Square, studied Arabic, worked and volunteered for numerous organizations, and had a freewheeling social life. Then he got involved in the street fighting that overthrew President Hosni Mubarak, and everything changed.Drew isolated himself, fearing arrest or deportation, and continued to study Arabic. Eventually, paranoia led him to flee Cairo in panic. He went missing for 2 days. His body was discovered in another Middle Eastern country, an apparent suicide victim. But was it really a suicide, or was it a homicide staged to look like suicide? If Drew did commit suicide, why would a loyal son do so without any communication with his parents or close friends? Could his mind have been in the grips of an undiagnosed mental illness? Had he suffered brain damage from exposure to tear gas? Did the violence of the revolution result in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?This book examines Drew's life from its beginning as a miracle child of older parents who had endured 2 decades of miscarriages and infertility. The book follows his seemingly ideal childhood through to an outstanding college career on the campus of Arizona State University. Drew's life choices, unconventional and sometimes unwise, are analyzed. His Cairo experience is detailed in 5 phases: before, during, and after the revolution; the time of President Morsi's reign; and the period following Morsi's ouster by the military. Drew's final days are examined, and conclusions are reached about what happened to cut his life short at age 28.
