Birding International (BI), a tour company offering tropical field trips for birdwatchers, has suffered several attacks on their field groups, in Venezuela, Costa Rica, Panama, and Argentina. In each case, the thieves stopped the tour bus at gunpoint and stole all of the personal baggage and optics. In Costa Rica, the tour leader, Maurice Renardo, took the wheel of the tour bus and chased the robbers, running them off the road, killing one and capturing the other. Gus Hamilton, president of BI, asks ornithologist David Cooper to fly to Costa Rica and investigate these attacks in order to determine who is perpetrating them and why. With Gabriela Barbaro, the San Jose BI resident manager, he visits the surviving thief in prison and learns that the man and his brother performed the attack on the Venezuelan tour and the one in Costa Rica under the pay of a mysterious woman ("La Gringa") who speaks Spanish with a North American accent. In Venezuela, David and Gabriela learn that the attacks appear to be the work of a shadowy detective agency, whose principals wish to acquire BI even if they have to resort to murder. When the agency increases the pressure on BI by shooting the leader of a BI tour, David and Gabriela manage to identify the source of the violence and with the aid of the Caracas manager of BI, turn the tables on the detective agency.
