The novel "Deep in the Hearts of Texans" takes place in the 1800's after the Civil War. It is a story of a group of men who have a friendship as in the old Greek story of Damon and Pythias. The men live on a ranch that is owned by the man who was their Major during the war. Jake Evans and the Major were longtime friends. Red was the young man who had followed Jake; Jericho likewise followed Red. Louis Calvin and Johnny Meyers were boys taken in by Jericho. All of them tried to follow in the steps of Jake. He was thought of by many as a god of the plains. The Major has a young daughter, and his best friend Jake, an unwritten partner, has a son only a few years older. After Jake and his wife pass on, Matt is raised by the Major and his wife. When the Major's wife passed away a few years later, he realizes that his daughter and this boy he thought of as a son are showing an interest in each other. Cindy always knew that Matt was the love of her life. Matt has recently come to the realization that he is falling in love with Cindy. The Major's reaction to this knowledge puts into motion events that no one could predict. The story takes you through gunfights, friendships, love and searches through rugged terrain with many obstacles. It also explores the deep feelings felt at the loss of ones who can never be replaced. Travel with these men through dangers and heartaches to find Matt and in doing so, find there is more to life than the ranch. Their encounters are not only with Indians and killers, but with some lovely women as well. All this shows that love can blossom in adversities and touch deep in the hearts of Texans.
