"What is math anxiety and what does it look like in the classroom? How can teachers assist students who have math anxiety? This action research study attempted to answer these questions through surveys, interviews, field notes, and small group instruction. Through analyzing literature in the field and collecting data, the results of this study found behaviors of math anxious students and strategies which give students the opportunity to alleviate their anxiety. Non-verbal behaviors, feelings of isolation, and the non-static nature of math anxiety were found within math anxious participants and the following strategies were determined to alleviate the anxiety: small group instruction, visuals, step-by-step process, and explicit instruction."--Abstract, p. 1.
