Description

"Desire's Fire" is an anthology of collected poems and short stories by John Bennett."Child's Play" is a collection for children. Included are tales of a turtle who finds her self-identity, an eagle who falls in love with a kite, a dancing tiger, a boy whose toe won't stop growing, and a nutcracker, rocking horse, and teddy bear who help Annie, a four-year-old girl. "Nordolf the Moose" is a fantasy explaining how, in 1984, Lord Vishnu vacationed on earth as a French-Canadian moose, here with his consort Henrietta (a goose who lays gold eggs.) The story features Nordolf winning at poker, dominating the 1984 Olympics, winning the Presidency, and freeing the world of debt. There is a guest appearance by King Kong in love with the Statue of Liberty. and Mayor Byron Trump is accused of embezzling golden eggs. "Dragonalia" is a collection of story poems about dragons and other beasties. Included are stories of Emily, a sea dragon who blows kisses and sets ships on fire, a giant worm whose slaughter creates the English language, "Tessie" a Lake Tahoe Ichthyosaur, and modern dragons as space aliens. There is a recurring visit by Cowboy Bob who provides thematic continuity, and whose madness and death delivers an unexpected genealogical gift. "Desert Coming & Seasonals" are stories and poems of emotional courage in transition to adulthood, as might have been told by Indians inhabiting the once-lush, now desert regions of Southeast California, with Inspiration is drawn from tales of Great Elk Spirit and the intaglios along the Colorado River. There are tales of a tribal chief called to lead his tribe to a new homeland, a boy who rescues the moon caught in a battle between giant rams, and a hawk who rescues a "Questioning Girl" from a snake-witch. The theme of transition is then carried into seasonal stories inspired by events in the author's life, and by the Dylan Thomas story, "A Child's Christmas in Wales." "Condor, Sacred Places, Circe" tell of a magical world within or behind the sense world. Condor begins with the solstice initiation of a Condor shaman, continues with his encounter with Juan Cabrillo (claimed California for the Spanish), and concludes by revealing the Mystery of Death known to Condor. "Sacred Places" are poems that touch on the magic in nature. And "Circe" tells of an afterlife encounter between Ulysses and Circe (the witch of Homer's Odyssey), with Circe reviving the warrior and inviting him on a sightseeing tour through Alfred Lord Tennyson's poetry. As a set, the collection variously lifts the veil between "seeming" and the life within. "A Child's Zodiac of Verse" is a collection of fourteen poems inspired by the familiar Zodiac "Signs" that loosely describes a yearly cycle of birth-death-afterlife-rebirth. "The Cosmic Village" is a collection of poems and stories inaugurating an otherworldly Village to be constructed in thought with continuing characters and locales. There is an invitation for other authors and artists to contribute to its development. Both collections are idealistic ("unrealism striving for perfection") and both are concerned with life purposes. Finally, "Reflections" is a collection of one hundred poems written over four decades, 1954-1994. It is a set of introspections and commentaries on Self and Society with themes interweaving emotional growth, scientific intellect, and metaphysical interests. Principal concerns are the overcoming of childhood alienation, and the development of a personal philosophy in keeping with modern physics. "Child's Play" is appropriate for young children and the young in heart of all ages. "Nordolf the Moose" and "Dragonalia" are for more mature readers but are not inappropriate for the young. "Desert Coming," "Condor," and "Circe" are for readers with shamanic, other-worldly, or philosophical interests. And "Child's Zodiac of Verse," "Cosmic Village," "Seasonals," "Sacred Places" and "Reflections" are most appropriate for adult readers.
