Lyle Hedman was drafted on December 16, 1941, four days after the United States declared war on Germany and Italy and nine days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He left his parents and sisters on their small South Dakota farm to join the U.S. Army in Kansas. He was 26, smart, strong, gregarious, and musical, playing the accordion everywhere he went. Trained as an army engineer, he learned skills in carpentry, bridging rivers, purifying water, using explosives, and clearing minefields which he referred to as "digging potatoes". He trained in Kansas, California, Tennessee, New York, and Pennsylvania before his unit, the newly created 5th Armored Division, deployed to England in May 1944 and entered the war at Utah Beach, Normandy, France in July 1944. Lyle wrote frequent letters filled with wry observations and humor. His last letter was dated February 22, 1945 as the division was crossing the Roer River into Germany. Germany surrendered on May 7, 1945. Lyle's letters and their aftermath are a deeply personal testament to the tedium, terror, and tragedy of war.
