This dissertation uses discourse analysis, specifically Longacre's discourse analysis model, for the interpretation of Ezek 40-48. It is found that the theme of holiness provides the key to understanding Ezek 40-48 and serves as the thread that makes the passage an integral part of the book. Maintaining God's holiness is the purpose for Ezekiel's final vision. To demonstrate the thesis, the study makes use of the complete dynamic process of discourse analysis: first from the parts up to the whole, then from the whole down to the parts. Chapter 2 analyzes the individual parts of Ezekiel to determine the macrostructure of the whole book. The connections between Ezek 40-48 and the rest of the book are then explored. Chapter 3 analyzes the parts of Ezek 40-48 to get the arrangement and purpose of the whole section. This chapter discusses how the theme of holiness is emphasized in the arrangement of Ezek 40-48. In chapter 4-7, after getting the overall arrangement of Ezek 40-48, four topics, namely the temple, priesthood, kingship and the land, are studied in detail. The theme of holiness manifested in the four topics is respectively investigated. This dissertation supports the integrity of the last nine chapters of Ezekiel and offers a new understanding of the text. First, the purpose of the final temple vision is not to provide a blueprint for the new temple, but to show the importance of holiness and provide the way for maintaining that holiness. Second, each part of Ezek 40-48 is held together by the theme of holiness to form an integrated unit. Third, the right way to worship God is to maintain God's holiness. When God's people are holy, God will be with them even when there is not a physical temple in the city (Ezek 48:35). This points to the eschatological view of the New Jerusalem, where the temple is not a physical entity but God himself (Rev 21).
