This case focuses on the pioneering use of Insider Action Design Research (IADR) in an entrepreneurship PhD study. Thus, it builds on my experiences using the methodology in enacting, documenting, and analysing in real-time a nascent digital entrepreneurial process. The study aimed to identify and explain the mechanisms through which a digital entrepreneurial process emerges and, more importantly, how this process upends traditional assumptions of entrepreneurial processes. I discuss my research journey from a digital entrepreneur to PhD researcher and now academic, beginning with the decisions that concluded in the use of IADR as a suitable methodology for answering my research question. I also bring the reader through challenges regarding the lack of pre-existing examples of the application of the methodology in entrepreneurship and how they were eventually overcome. Ultimately, the goal of this case study is to relive my experiences with the reader toward providing key insights that may be adapted to facilitate similar studies whose research questions find fit with an IADR approach.
