Part one tells of the growing up of two young people: Mac, in rural England, who was four years old when World War II broke out and Barbara, in rural Maryland, who was conceived just before her father went off to the Korean War. Their growing up, from infants to young adults is told in alternate chapters using the events and people, both humorous and sad, that made up their existence; village life, a boy's growing sexuality, a young girl's angst over her prosthetic leg and the forgotten differences in attitudes and social behavior. In part two, Mac is living in America, newly retired and heading south in his sailboat. Barbara is a self-employed mathematician living in her small riverside cottage. They meet, quickly fall in love and begin a life together. Their wonderful life is increasingly marred by Barbara's growing periods of withdrawal. They return to Maryland from sailing to make a new plan and follow a suggestion by Barbara's mother to settle down to live and work in a small, rented house on the west coast of Mexico. Barbara's bouts of gloom do not diminish. Finally she came back from a business trip to tell Mac she was leaving him, that she was going to live with a woman she knew from her college days and that they were lovers.Mac continues to live in the same house and slowly, he returns to his writing and begins to participate in village life. At morning mass one Sunday he meets Juana, a Mexican American woman. A slow friendship develops under the watchful eyes of the Mexican villagers, but during one wonderful weekend, in a faraway beachfront bungalow, Mac and Juana make their decision about the future.Their life together on Mac's boat is idyllic, but news of Barbara's murder causes a break in their lives when Mac offers to help with the investigation. But he exceeded the time that Juana agreed to wait and she is gone. Another search in Mexico ensues, but this time Mac is not so successful ----------------------------------------------------.
