In 1860, seventeen-year-old Dulsey Carpenter faces some major challenges. First, Edward Richards, a widower who likes his liquor, has asked for her hand in marriage. Dulsey wants no part of this man, "this devil dressed in a fine red shirt." But Richard persists in his efforts to make her his wife, and will not take no for an answer. The situation becomes complicated when Dulsey's father dies. On his deathbed, he requests that she travel to the Arkansas Territory to notify her grandfather and her uncle of his death. Her mother refuses to give her permission, citing Dulsey's help is needed in caring for the family's 300-acre farm. Determined to honor her father's wishes, Dulsey, accompanied by her best friend, Carla, and the mysterious Harvey Kendall, leave Tennessee and travel on horseback across two states. Along the way, their lives become entangled in those of runaway slaves and bounty hunters. Charges of murder haunt them as love blooms and justice struggles to prevail.
