Down Under Manhattan Bridge, or DUMB Magazine is a publication that engineered a sea change in American Art in 1980, and inspired a Neo-Expressionist revolt against the then-staid and conservative Realist and "Color Field" Painting movements of the 1970's. DUMB was patterned after 'Die Bruke' ('The Bridge'), the great German Expressionist magazine founded by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, which was published in Dresden in 1905. Not unlike 'Die Brucke', this is the publication that inspired fierce competition by the many DUMB Magazine imitators later on in the 1980's. To be sure, DUMB stands as a precursor to the notorious Lower East Side Art Scene of the 1980's: a loose confederation of artists, poets and art galleries dedicated to Punk, Graffiti, Postmodern and Neo-Expressionist Art. DUMB Magazine, together with an enormous number of publications, Art Gallery Opening notices, reviews and other memorabilia have been included in the Downtown '80s Art Scene Archive in the Fales Library at New York University and several other university libraries all over the US. This magazine includes artwork by internationally acclaimed artists Red Grooms, Alex Katz, and Ronald Markman. Two other much more literary first edition Volumes of DUMB, #16 and #17 (published in the mid 1990's), are still extant and in print, available only as collectibles and rare editions. Founder and Editor-in-chief Dan W. Freeman is a painter who is included in many public and private collections in the US, Europe, and China.
