It wasn't just the valuable minerals and unknown flora and fauna but the promise of a new species of small hominid whose bones he had discovered. That would be a brilliant discovery especially as some of the fossils were relatively recent. Then Abu Sayyaf Islamic terrorists raided some local island resorts kidnapping tourists and putting the area in an uproar.The expedition is to be canceled. Then the Oil Company that owns Nature Search suggested that Alice and the narrator might be willing to provide a security force to look after the scientists . They of course jumped at the chance, the unknown, science and danger is what they did. The expedition will go ahead despite any pirates, terrorists or whatever they might encounter in the jungle and these were the simple impediments. 559pages A separate story just following on in time.
