Unlike office-like collaborative domains, medical collaboration is characterized by highly dynamic nature. Different professionals must be involved promptly, accurately at various points during patient care. Due to varied timeframes of each role, it is hard to know beforehand who will join which care team. Especially in urgent patient care like an ED, care teams are dynamically and quickly assembled upon patients' arrival, wherein they engage in interdependent and complex patient care activities. After patients are discharged, they then quickly disassemble. With these characteristics in regard, I term this medical teamwork as loosely formed collaboration. In this thesis, I conducted an observational study looking at ED nurses' communication behaviors in loosely formed collaboration. To do so, I analyzed ED nurses' unique work characteristics and use of communication channels. The importance to maintain team-awareness and to support role-based calling indicates their communication should support and enhance the shared work responsibilities. The need to make informative interruptions shows the ED communication should acknowledge appropriate information transparency in various occasions. The ED nurses' varied preference of communication channels in different situations highlights how the ED nurses assess the reliability on communication channels based on other staffs' range of workspace. Based on findings, following key elements are identified for future communication technology design for loosely formed collaboration: designing for team-based communication, providing lightweight response, and supporting information transparency. This study can contribute in HCI, CSCW, healthcare and other temporary collaborative settings by building better understanding on communication practice in loosely formed collaboration.
