Description

This bilingual publication is the first book devoted to the work of one of Mexico's most promising emerging artists. Edgardo Aragon (b. 1985 Oaxaca, Mexico). Exploring the impact of Mexico's ongoing drug wars on the rural regions of the country, Aragon's works draw attention to the ways through which history and memory are inscribed onto Mexico's southern landscapes and abandoned locales. Working mostly in video and photography, Aragon creates distinctly unique portraits of Mexico's violently charged social fabric; mobilizing silence and absence as visual tropes to convey a national consciousness burdened with disillusionment and despair. This publication marks the completion of Aragon's first major video trilogy and documents over five years of research and fieldwork that led to its realization. Edited by REDCAT Gallery Director/Curator Ruth Estevez, the book includes a new essay by Mexican critic and art historian Cuauhtemoc Medina, an interview between the artist and Estevez and a selection of never before seen drawings and sketches from the artist's storyboards alongside full-color film stills. "Edgardo Aragon: La Trampa | The Trap" is published by MISPRINT Press, an imprint of The Mistake Room.
