Elaine Cost is fourteen years old. She is a freshman at Mercy High School in Rochester, New York. She has many interests, including instrumental music, musical comedy, clothes, shoes, text messaging, instant messaging, and all other forms of messaging. She has many friends. They have names like Cat, Jordan, and Ruby. Elaine has many possessions. Her room is like a museum of the first fourteen years of her life. The room is arranged to maximize accessibility. Everything is in its proper place. If I ask Elaine for a green Sharpie(r) marker, she instantly goes to the exact location on her table and retrieves it. Her room is therefore an external reflection of her brain, and since I am such a big fan of Elaine, I wanted to preserve this view of her at this moment in her life. I have tried to photograph her room before, but have always been dissatisfied with any single frame, regardless of how wide the angle of view. Her room must be experienced in the round to be truly appreciated. I might have made a video documentary of her room, but videos have the unpleasant characteristic of taking command of time in a way that I find increasingly distasteful as I grow older. So I decided to do a book instead. This book takes you on a tour of Elaine's room in a way that should leave you with a fairly good idea of what it is like to actually be there. The only element missing is Elaine herself. Elaine's Room is the third in a series of "instant books" that I have created to explore new possibilities for the book enabled by digital technology. This book was conceived, produced, and published on Saturday, February 25, 2006. I started working on the book shortly after lunch, and it was available for online purchase worldwide by dinnertime. I hope Elaine likes it. Then I hope she cleans her room!
