McCartney also points out the role of slavery in Eppington's agricultural success; explores the fascinating relationship between the Eppes and Jefferson families, including many Eppington visits and extended stays of Thomas Jefferson and his daughters; reports on details of construction, modification, and expansion of the plantation house itself, which today still stands and is open to limited public visitation; and documents successive Eppington occupants and owners from the Eppes family to the present day, including the Thweatt, Cox, Hinds and Cherry families and public ownership by Chesterfield County government. The book also is amply illustrated and features an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources.
