Description

The Family Caregiver Social Behavior Assessment Inventory (FCSBAI) is an instrument designed to assess the needs of caregivers of the elderly in a rural setting based on the degree to which their attitudes correlate to self-identified needs. This paper addresses the psychometric qualities of the FCSBAI and uses this instrument for a comparative analysis of two groups of informal family caregivers in 1999 (n = 53) and in 2001 (n = 44). Ninety-seven informal rural caregivers were surveyed in Marquette County, Michigan. Six dimensions of caregiving attitudes were identified through exploratory analysis of self-identified caregiving needs, the effect of (1) care recipient factors (length of care, age, gender, type of disease, relationship to caregiver (i.e., mother); (2) personal care to meet the needs of the care recipient and caregiver; (3) safety issues (i.e., need to add a ramp, buy medical equipment); (4) financial issues (i.e., paying for home health aides; care recipient lacks health insurance); (5) social responsibilities and ties of the caregiver; (6) access to community resources . Reliability analyses showed the standard Chronbach alpha for the attitude and coping scales are 0.60 and 0.75 respectively, indicating sufficient internal consistencies. This study presented a theoretical framework for understanding rural caregivers and research of a sample population to explore risk factors and provide recommendations for assessment, education, and support for informal family caregivers and society as a whole.
