The microbiological hazards of occupational needlestick injuries [ONS] to healthcare and hospital domestic staff are already well documented. Questionnaire responses indicated that 72% of participants in this evaluation had in the past sustained ONS when using conventional needles. Sterimatic Medical Systems Ltd supplied for evaluation the latest versions of a safety blood collection needle [SSN] with automatic safety features designed to reduce ONS both during clinical use and after disposal. Evaluation of the SSN took place in five hospitals. The main objectives were to evaluate the automatic safety features and user-acceptability of the device during phlebotomy. The overall conclusion was that the SSN undoubtedly reduced the risk of ONS and could be used effectively in phlebotomy by trained and experienced staff. This conclusion reflected the views of two users of the SSN who were independent of the evaluation. However, the evaluation identified some modifications that would probably make the SSN more generally acceptable for routine use. An economic study was not undertaken. Costs could be a very significant factor in the introduction of ONS control measures and all potential users of the SSN are advised to carry out cost-effectiveness and cost-benefit evaluations with reference to local operating conditions, health and safety requirements, and costs associated with ONS injuries. Those interested in SSN may wish to make contact with the two users identified in the report.
