Description

Evocations is a four-part work for quintet comprised of flute, Bb clarinet, horn in F, violoncello, and contrabass. The composition is derived from, and ultimately inspired by four poems by W.B. Yeats that I had set for soprano and piano. Those works -- including "The Lover Mourns for the Loss of Love" and "He Tells of the Perfect Beauty"--Are from Yeats's early period. They are lush, passionate, ethereal pieces expressing dream-like impressions of beauty. Together, they convey regret and desire evoked by the memory of unrequited love, undiminished by the passage of time, and of the enduring fondness for someone now appreciated spiritually across the distance of time and space. These sensibilities are reflected in Evocations' harmonically romantic language and by the often wistful, yearning melodic lines articulated by the wind instruments, particularly in the latter two movements. Set against a generally contrapuntal texture, the melodies -- through chromatic, imitative, and frequently disjunct motion -- evoke a pensive melancholy suggested by Yeats's contemplation of a romantic longing which cannot be assuaged.
