Description

The purpose of this volume is three-fold. First, to offer an overview, some intellectual food for thought by way of historical snippets, that examine carefully and analytically the important background and influencing conditions that serve to explain, in part, the establishment, development, problems and promise of selected Black communities in America. In other words, instead of listing the black communities individually and then addressing each of the sociopolitical subject areas that transpired within them (e.g., the job front, educational issues, neighborhood associations, confrontations, etc.), I flipped the script and prioritized each exodus as being the source. Therefore, as I address each of the sociopolitical subject areas, I then go city by city and compare what blacks encountered when they migrated to that city. Through this study then, we should have 22 case studies of how blacks addressed the issue of locating housing, how black migrants dealt with educational concerns, how blacks dealt with confrontations with white citizens groups, mobocracy and so on. Some areas of analysis will include all the cities mentioned while others won't. Again, this book is the fuse of the stick of dynamite that I hope will be lit by future scholars who want to understand the perseverance and overall greatness of African-American people. This leads to my second purpose for this book. What I found in my research was that no matter how important, ethical or well-meaning these migrations were, and how different each may have been in terms of time, place and circumstance, the second point is to show the similarity of the outcomes of these various migrations. No matter how peaceful and well-intended, it was always the evil-mindedness, racist reactions and outright cruelty of the white race that led to the riots, violence, restrictive covenants and other race-related atrocities that you are going to read about. The third and final factor regarding the purpose of this book relating to black migration-related events which piqued my interest in black migration is rooted in the magnificent work by Joe William Trotter, Black Milwaukee, The Making of an Urban Proletariat, 1915-1945. At any rate, the cities and towns include: Dallas/Fort Worth, TX.; Detroit/Monroe, MI.; East St. Louis, IN.; Evansville, IN.; Harvey/Dixmoor, IL.; Houston, TX.; Kansas City, MO.; Memphis, TN.; Milwaukee, WI.; Monroe, MI; New Orleans, LA.; Omaha, NE.; Philadelphia, PA.; Pittsburgh, PA.; Richmond, CA.;Trenton, New Jersey and Wichita, KS. This, then, is but an optimistic beginning.
