For over 45 years Huntsville Literary Association has championed the literary arts. In this second year of the Dorothy Hendry Award for Literary Achievement, HLA hopes to enable a younger generation of not only successful writers, but successful engineers, doctors, farmers, and teachers. Students from over 130 public and private high schools were invited to submit a short story to the Young Writers' Contest. The winners of the High School Short Story Division of Young Writers have captured the emotions of their age and culture and invite you to read of their Expressions 2014: Student Voices from North Alabama. Included are short stories for those with a love of adventure, crime drama, fantasy, historical fiction, philosophy, satire, science fiction, slice of life, speculation, and thrillers. The poetry of the students covers the full spectrum of emotions, cadence and rhythms of life, especially as they see it through the eyes of the young adult. And interspersed throughout the anthology's 410 pages is a large variety of artwork, including digital art, general art, and photography that maps well with the many stories and poems of the young of heart. Over 88 student winners have contributed to this winning collection of literature. All proceeds from sale of the anthology go toward the awards for students in next year's contest. All of the effort from HLA is volunteered services, including the publisher's.
