My mother's stories have stayed with me all my life. I'm sure my brothers and sister heard the same stories, but the stories in this book are written the way I remember them. I have taken the liberty of adding my own imagination to the stories, so the stories are really my interpretation of my mother's stories. I do believe that Mom gave me the stories as a child so I could write about them when I grew up. I wouldn't have written the stories if I had not gone to college late in life. I was in my forties and going to college when I discovered I had a talent for writing. One of the courses I took was a Women's Studies class on autobiographical writing. I started writing the short stories about my mom growing up on a farm. While I was writing her stories, they grew and became real to me. After reading my Florence stories, my professor told me to keep on writing and expanding on them - that I had a gold mine - a real treasure in her stories. I can't tell you how many times I wrote and re-wrote the Florence stories adding my own imagination to make the short stories longer. When I first started to write, I was using an old Smith Corona typewriter and every time I had to make a correction or add or change anything in the stories, I would have to start all over and retype every page. The electric typewriter with correction tape was a blessing to me in the next phase of my writing. Now, with my own personal computer, it is so easy to write, cut and paste, and having a spell check and all kinds of help aids, makes life easier for a writer. I hope you enjoy my mother's stories as much as I do. Even after so many years, when I read her stories today, it seems like the first time I have read them. Her stories are magical.
