Description

All the stories in this collection have been taken from real life. They depict a cross section of contemporary Indian life-- urban and rural. A fine specimen of Indian creative writing in English, these stories provide fascinating glimpses into the panorama of Indian life with its baffling variety. They are an attempt to portray its rich contrasts wherein the simple and the refined , the old and the new-- jostle against one another. They offer a vignette or still life picture of reality. Remarkably, most of the 'stories' are rooted in true experiences of life that the author had undergone while being exposed to varied cultures and people. Some of them originated during interaction with family and friends , while others originated from media reports. Together they had a deep impact on the author, leading to germination of ideas compelling enough to be penned down as stories. Five stories have a woman centric theme i. e. Alien Hearts , Daughters, Half a Century, The Illiterate and At The Fair . The stories portray the continuous struggle of contemporary Indian women to overcome gender bias, as in Daughters , and to carve out a personal space for themselves. Alien Hearts is a refreshing take on the dilemma of two women caughtup in a cross cultural milieu and their successful attempt to overcome it. Half a Century depicts a female author trying to ward off Writer's Block by revisiting her past for inspiration. She is shown as effectively combating barriers of time and change. Both the stories sensitively capture the nostalgia of female protagonists for their homeland and alma mater respectively. At The Fair is yet another engaging story in the collection which shows how a naive college girl is rescued in the nick of time by her teacher, from the clutches of a trafficker. The Illiterate is a heart warming story of a simple housemaid who is able to overcome the handicap of illiteracy with the help of her kind employers. The story expresses compassion for the poor and the weak and reposes faith in the basic goodness of human beings. Four stories have Campus Life and University Education as the theme, i.e. On The Campus, The Examination, The Raid, and The Seminar. They earnestly explore the academic scenario in the author's home state. Various challenges facing students in the field of higher education have been pointed out and remedies suggested. Occupying the centre space of these stories are the starry eyed young university students--the pulse of a new generation. The Jewellery Shop and The Beauty Parlour offer a peek into the unique psyche of Indian women---their love for jewellery and a growing fashion sense. They describe rising crimes in urban areas------------with women always being at the receiving end. The Spirit deals with an encounter with the supernatural. It offers a ravishing account of the countryside--explored by a couple of adventurous siblings. The Saviour is a moving tale about the loyalty of a dog towards its master.Acting on instinct, she saves him twice from a poisonous snake. It highlights the need for compassion and ethical treatment of animals. A Slice of Life is a humorous description of Christmas celebrated in an Anglo Indian Family. The matron of the house ,a well meaning devout Christian,is unsparingly enthusiastic about the festivities. These stories have a Pan India flavor and cover different parts of the country. While offering glimpses into a rich spectrum of Indian life to the readers, they entertain them too. Laced with humour and embellished with imagination, they provide a powerful insight into different aspects of life. All the stories are marked by a deep underlying humanism that gives them a unity of spirit in the midst of all their diversity.
