Peter Tegel was born in what is now the Czech Republic to a Catholic German-speaking family in the Czech Sudetenland in 1932. This memoir is an account of the different destinies and divided loyalties of families that are part German, part Czech, part Catholic, part Jewish, and are often in conflict. In 1936 the author's widowed mother marries, her second husband being Jewish. In 1938 the Munich Treaty ceded the Czech Sudeten territories to Nazi Germany, thus subjecting the family to the Nazi race laws. They flee to England but other members of their families stay behind in Nazi occupied territory. The German branch of the mother's family will become refugees during the 1945-46 expulsion of the Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia. The Czech branch of the family will be deemed kulaks under communism and expelled from their farms, which become collectives. The Jewish stepfather's family perish in the Holocaust. The author grows up in the predominantly Jewish refugee community in London. A 'foreign' boy, a German-speaking refugee in wartime Britain in an all-boys' English school, there are questions of identity, national, religious and sexual. In his fifties, on a first return to his hometown in Moravia, in search of the family home and his natural father's grave, the author meets his Czech relatives and learns of their dispossession under communism. He recovers memories of his early childhood and of his natural father in a process of self-discovery where private life and history come together. Peter Tegel's memoir takes us to the present, when the Czech relatives - after the collapse of Communism - recover their property.
