Trained as an art historian herself specialized in the nineteenth-century, she says, "for an idea that the nineteenth century got ruins civilized on scientific principles can be taken for granted. Nineteenth-century architects must be allowed to exercise their own discretion in choosing a suitable restoration plan. And we may criticize the restoration and even be without it."
